Female Boxers and the representation of Woman in Public Space

Barcelona/Brussels 2003/2008

Most of my Street Art works in Barcelona and Brussels are direct reactions to the use of the female figure as an ornamental commodity in the Media and Advertisement as well as the disguised privatization of Public Space.

Advertisements playing on making men and woman feel incomplete or inadequate in order to offer a consumerist solution not only alienates the viewer, but robs Public Space of its original purpose.

The subject of female boxers came to my attention as I looked for characters which would act like social warriors and guardians (especially in dangerous parts of the city avoided by women at night).

3 Women Barcelona / Bac de Roda

This piece was done on the outside of a squat hosting lectures on ecology, social concerns and serving free dinners to the homeless.

Here I wished to portray three dignified women: One, in her teens holds a sapling in a bag, metaphor of our ecologic future. The second, pregnant carries in her womb her future generations, and the third, older is the guardian of women's history.
